Chang shou mian (长寿面) — longevity noodles — are eaten on birthdays, particularly for elderly family members. The noodles must be made as a single uncut strand — a length of noodle representing the length of the person's life. Cut noodles are considered inauspicious. The most famous preparation is Yi mian (伊面) — egg noodles in a light broth with simple garnishes.

The nian ye fan (年夜饭) — Chinese New Year Eve reunion dinner — is the most important meal of the year for Chinese families. Menu architecture follows symbolic principles: fish (yu — homophone for surplus), whole chicken (ji — luck), lotus root (lian ou — continuous good fortune), long noodles (longevity), dumplings (yuanbao gold ingot shape). The number of dishes should be even and auspicious.
